Challenge #5: Distress Powder
Sponsored by Simon Says Stamp!
Hi everyone! As you see, I've changed things up a bit this week, and congratulated the winners of last week's challenge in a separate blog post a just few minutes ago. I'll be doing it this way from now on, so don't forget to back up and see if you're a winner!
Before we get to this week's technique, I want to give a big welcome the folks who've just discovered the Compendium of Curiosities challenge! It's been absolutely wonderful to see so many new names popping up on the link list, and, of course, to have the opportunity to see all the beautiful art you're creating!
Those who are newer to this challenge series may not have had the opportunity to go back and read all the posts from the beginning, so I just want to pass along a quick reminder that you really do need to have Tim's Compendium of Curiosities to participate. When Tim gave me his permission to host this series, I promised him that I would not post details on how to do the techniques, and one of the few "rules" I have is that none of the participants do, either. This isn't just an issue of copyright (although that's certainly a consideration). It's about respecting Tim and the tremendous amount of work he put into his wonderful book. So, while I know it's counter-intuitive for most of us who blog about our art, when it comes to the actual instructions, mum's the word!
For the purposes of this challenge series, think of the Compendium as your text book, and approach the weekly challenges as a way to really perfect the technique as Tim presents it (with your own personal flair, of course!). And, if you haven't had the opportunity to get your own copy, please do! You can order it directly from Tim, or from any of the fabulous sponsors listed on the sidebar over there. →
And now... let's talk about Distress Embossing Powder!
Please open your Compendium of Curiosities to page 43, for the Distress Powder technique!
I get the impression that Distress Powder is something people either really love, or really don't like at all. I fall wholeheartedly into the LOVE camp, and my mission this week is to convert anyone who doesn't. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I consider it one of the coolest products to ever hit the crafting market.
The thing is, it's so much more than just an embossing powder, and as I've played with it I've come to think of it more as "Distress Heat-Activated Texture Enhancer of Wonder." When I want the utmost in grungy, down-and-dirty, been-around-the-block-and-all-the-better-for-it art, this is my go-to product. When I want to create a sandy beach, a gravel pathway, or even a flocked faux fabric, I grab the Distress Powder. And of course, when I want a cool, texturized, completely unique embossed effect, nothing else comes close.
I could go on and on, but I know you'd much rather hear about the prizes this week and get started on your own Distress Powder masterpiece! So, I'm happy to announce that our good friends at Simon Says Stamp are back with another fabulous $25 shopping spree! Just think... you could use that to order one of Tim's new stamp sets!
And that's not all! The lovely Gloria at the All Things Tim group is again offering a prize for one lucky member who adds their creation to the Compendium of Curiosities album at the group's home page. Please be sure to tag your photo "CCC #5" when you upload it there.
To be eligible to win either prize, simply create your own work of art using Tim's Distress Powder technique. You only need to use one color of powder, but please be aware that you really do have to use Distress Powder for this. Plain old embossing powder just won't have the same mojo.
(SPECIAL TIP: For the best results with the least frustration, follow all the instructions, and pay extra attention to Step 4! )
All right, my texture-loving friends, I can't wait to see you ROCK the Distress Powder technique! This challenge is open until 11:59 PM (MDT) next Sunday, July 18. I have a feeling this is going to be the coolest set of submissions yet...
Big hugs to all!
Linda

Hi Linda, back again! Been dreading this one do not have any distressing powder and being un-employed cannot afford to get any so going to have to pass. For the record wondered which page this week you are using, assume its Page 43 would that be correct? xx Zoe
Linda,
As a newbie myself, I want to thank you for your warm welcome. You have a way with words in your posts that gives us all the "warm fuzzies". Thanks so much for the friendliness AND for the awesome challenges! I can't wait to play! I'm just bummed I have to work first, lol.
You won't believe this, but I have never used and did not have any of the Distress EP! I just this weekend told my DH that I had to find some and we did ! Linda, your tag is delightful and it is nice to see the EP in action. I am so glad that I took part of this challenge, because my book probably would have just sat around! Thanks Linda!!
Love all the texture added to your flower using the distress powder!
Gorgeous art Linda.. loving the colours on your flower :O)) Thanks for another FAB theme... mine is now on my Blog
Congrats to the lucky winners too :O)) x

I'm really enjoying the book and the challenge! I started a journal of all my entries (if the images is too large, such as a collage or journal, I put a photo in it's place). I'll post pics of my journal eventually. KUDOS Linda and thanks for you kind comments every week!
Linda,
Your tag is beautiful!!! I love how you used several different colors and the amazing coverage you got!
I feel about distress powders the way I do about all embossing - love the look, but I have very hit and miss success. I know it often has to do with the paper, inks and humidity, but I think it also often has to do with how the stars are aligned!
LOL!
Rinda
I love the new look to your blog and your new photo. What a cute little kitty. :) I like the tag you've created here...that is distress powder? I like it. Anything glittery is just fine by me! Have a great week! Theresa
Brilliant, but haven't got any....so....have just ordered one to try out. Oooh great fun, loving these challenges, thank you.

Forgot to mention, love the new picture! You're both CUTE!
Thanks for the challenge again Linda - I don't usually use the distress powders so it was good to force myself! I've just added my link. I love your tag it's beautiful! (I noticed your new profile pic too - lovely!).
Hi, again. Monday comes round so fast with this to look forward to! Have had 2 goes today, cos I've not used distress EP much. I have linked them for you.
Fabby challenge Linda - did me good to rescue my embossing powders from the bottom of their box x
Love the colours and texture on your flower tag. I haven't used my Distress Powders enough so it was great to get them all out at once ! Love the technique.
Marilyn
Love the way yours turned out! It's great to get out all these wonderful things I have had stashed away. I will use them a lot more now I think. Thannks for another great week and your new picture is so pretty!
Linda you are an incredible hostess. I am sooo glad you are doing this challenge. You make everyone feel so good. Thank you for all your kind words. They are appreciated. Today I noticed a sunflower in my garden. I didn't plant it. Probably came from the birdseed, but somehow it just appeared all bright and cheery. That is how your tag feels to me. and the sentiment fits perfectly. Cheers!
I am enjoying your blog and your challenges with Tim´s book...I would love to become a "follower" of your blog...would you consider adding "subscribe by email" to your feedblitz options? That way I could get your updates delivered right to my email...that would be great :)

Beautiful tag Linda, I love the colours, the flower pops from the page. I have never used Distress powders but had one pot in my cupboard. Thank you for a fab challenge again this week and thanks to the sponsors. Have a good day, Tracy x
